Our Story
It Started With a Question
What if the problem with AI wasn't the models — but the way we talk to them? In 2023, our founder Tommy Saunders began experimenting with structuring prompts inside Notion databases instead of throwing them into chat windows. The results were immediate and dramatic: outputs went from generic to genuinely useful.
The Column Prompt Breakthrough
The real breakthrough came when we embedded prompts directly into Notion database columns. Instead of writing one prompt at a time, we could fire 23 column prompts simultaneously from a single context brief. Each column knew exactly what to generate — mission statements, value propositions, audience personas — all from one source of truth.
From Prompts to Systems
We quickly realized that individual prompts are disposable — but prompt systems are assets. We built interconnected libraries where the output of one prompt feeds into the context of the next. Knowledge bases that auto-populate. Workflow templates that orchestrate entire content pipelines. The architecture became the product.
Intelligent Operations Is Born
What started as personal experiments became Intelligent Operations — a company dedicated to building AI-powered prompt libraries and knowledge systems. Today, The Prompt Engineering Project houses over 2,500 prompts across 12 libraries, serving marketers, founders, and operators who want to make AI actually work for their business.

Tommy Saunders discovered that structuring prompts in Notion databases — rather than pasting them into chat windows — produced dramatically better AI outputs. The first Company Identity prompt library was born.

We pioneered the column-prompt pattern — embedding prompts directly into Notion database columns so AI auto-fill generates structured content row by row. This became the core of every library we ship.

We built the fan-out / fan-in system: a single Context Brief fires prompts across an entire database simultaneously, then synthesizes outputs into a unified knowledge base. Scale went from linear to exponential.
